Why is MATH 095 General Mathematics a noncredit
course? As stated in the course description, the course covers
"the essentials of high school algebra". Since MATH 095 General
Mathematics covers high school algebra, this is not a college-level
mathematics course: you cannot earn college credit for a high
school-level mathematics course.

How important is it for me to complete and pass
MATH 095 General Mathematics? Starting Fall 2007, incoming
students must complete General Education Requirement Goal 2
(Quantitative) within the first year of matriculating at
Framingham State College. Since you must pass a credit-bearing
mathematics course in order to complete Goal 2 (Quantitative), you must
be eligible to take a college-level mathematics course.
Thus, you must complete and pass MATH 095 General Mathematics or an
approved similar course at a community college or you must retake (if
you have not used your one retake opportunity) the mathematics
placement exam. Since the academic year consists of the fall
semester, spring semester, and summer session, you have, basically, two
remaining (2) opportunities during which to complete Goal 2
(Quantitative), the spring semester and the summer session, neither of
which you would want to waste on retaking a noncredit course.

what mathematics courses will I be eligible to take? Once you
have completed and passed MATH 095 General Mathematics, you will be

only, MATH 117 Introduction to Statistics, MATH 119 Mathematics for the
Liberal Arts, or MATH 123 College Algebra.

You may have an assignment for which you create a web page and/or Blackboard ePortfolio presenting your
analysis as part of the assignment, students may provide
comments/feedback regarding the analysis presented in these web pages
and/or Blackboard ePortfolios.
-
You will have at least one (1) assignment for which you
must create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation as well as appropriate
handouts for the class.
-
Working in pairs, you will be required to research the history of
mathematics concepts/methods and/or individuals who developed
algebraic concepts and techniques and to present
your findings to the class; this is part of your
History of Mathematics assignment. For this assignment, you must
create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, appropriate handouts
with references for the class, and you may create a web page or Blackboard ePortfolio to showcase your research.
